Christmas Breaks

Big So you're thinking about heading away for a two-day break this winter but want to go somewhere a bit different? Somewhere with great restaurants, culture and accommodation where you can really relax in style? Copenhagen it is then. Let's see what the Danes have to offer.

First off, the food. There are four main types of Danish cookery. Meat Dishes: Frikadeller (pan-fried dumplings of minced meat) and roasted meats are served with gravy and potatoes. Fish dishes: fish soups are big business in the Danish capital, as well as smoked and pickled fish dishes. Smørrebrod: an open faced variety of sandwiches (they literally have every type - no filler is too obscure.) Koldt bord: this is as close to a Smorgasbord as it gets. A traditional course based meal including fish, seafood, cheese and sausages.

Now you might have heard that Scandinavia is known to be expensive when it comes to hotels..well it can be. Fortunately this is down to the fact that the standard of accommodation is so high. Even on the low end of the scale you'll get a great hotel service.

As for sightseeing, well 'The Little Mermaid', Copenhagen's most famous statue is a must see site for tourists. The beautiful figure sits on a rock in the Copenhagen harbour at Langelinie. It was commissioned in 1909 and based on real life ballerina Ellen Price. And if ballet's up your street, go and check out Det "Kongelige Theater" for all the most exquisite dance shows, opera and music concerts.

A Christmas break in Copenhagen is so packed with culture and style that you'll have booked your next Christmas break there before the New Year is even in!
