Living it Up in New York City: Budget Hotels in the Big Apple The Big Apple = big budget. This is the normal equation for New York City holidays. In the “city that never sleeps,” it’s quite hard to find a decent place to snooze for a minimal amount. Fortunately, there are few budget hotels within the city where you can relax after a hard day of sightseeing. They may not have infinity pools, spas, or marble bathrooms with tubs, but you’re sure to get the basic creature comforts.First on the list: Second Home on Second Avenue. You’ll be sleeping in Peru, the Caribbean, a tribal city, or a modern home in this low-cost hotel—depending on your themed room of choice, that is. Undoubtedly, the artwork and the low prices are the scene stealers here. But the view of a romantic neighbouring garden and the impressive night sky are something to smile about, too. Still on the art theme, Colonial House Inn in the Chelsea neighbourhood is not just your ordinary hotel; it’s a gallery, too. You’ll feel like you’re in a little museum when you step into the lobby, which features The 24 Hours of Life Gallery, including art by Keith Haring and proprietor Mel Cheren. Internet access on the first floor lounge, free satellite TV, and mini-fridges and fireplaces (in some rooms) are more than enough amenities for a price of GBP 57. There’s also a free breakfast! Kids are undoubtedly the inspiration of the affordable hotel East Village Bed and Coffee. But that doesn’t mean you have to be one to appreciate it. It’s actually a nice place to unleash your inner child, with rooms such as the Zen room; the Treehouse room, used as Jennifer Tilly’s bedroom in the French movie Happy End; and the Children’s room, adorned with children’s artwork, chalkboard wall, and a school desk. If you’re not so much into kid stuff, there are other rooms, too: Dutch room, Black & White room, French room, Mexican room, Afghani room, Flight room, Observatory, the Beach, and Empty Nest. |
