There’s so much to do on a holiday in Morocco!
It may only be a hop, skip and a jump from Spain, over the Straits of Gibraltar’s eight narrow miles of water – but stepping into Morocco is like stepping into another world. With its fascinating fusion of cultures, heritage, languages and traditions, you can be sure of a unique holiday experience. Just travelling from the faded splendour of Tangier to the thriving modern city of Casablanca will illustrate what a wonderfully diverse country Morocco has evolved into. In the capital city Rabat, the Museum of Moroccan Art is well worth a look, as it displays artefacts from pre-historic times up to the Islamic period. In addition to being an excellent attraction, it will add context to your trip. Another must-visit destination is Fez, where those famous tasselled red hats got their name. The city boasts an array of riads, traditional houses built around a central courtyard, many of which have now become restaurants and boutique hotels. No visit would be complete, though, without experiencing the imperial city of Marrakech, where snake charmers and bustling souks – or market places – abound. There is also a ‘wild’ side to Morocco – those who fancy a spot of hiking can consider tackling pathways along the High Atlas Mountains, and there is no end of exotic and multicoloured birds to look out for in coastal areas. And while travel to the Western Sahara territory is not generally advised – it’s always worth checking the latest security status with the British Embassy – there are other areas such as Agadir in the north of the country, where holidaymakers can enjoy a wonderful camel trek. |
